Mayıs 1890'da Vincent van Gogh Güney Fransa'daki Saint-Rémy'den Paris'in kuzeyindeki Auvers-sur-Oise'a taşındı. Kariyerinin en son ve en yaratıcı zamanı da bu dönemde başladı.

Van Gogh'un stili on yıllık kariyeri boyunca çok gelişti ve evrildi. Auvers-sur-Oise döneminin en ilginç ve özgün özelliklerinden birisi 50'ye 100 cm'lik "çift-kare" tuvallerdir. Mektup 644'te (24 veya 25 Haziran 1890) Van Gogh bu formatı uygulamaktan bahseder:

Bir de 40 inçe 20 inçlik bir buğday tarlası tuvalim var . . . .

1890 Haziran'ı boyunca Van Gogh tamamen olmasa da, çoğunlukla çift-kare formatında çalışmaya devam etti. Yine Mektup 644'te kardeşi Theo'ya Auvers Şatosu ve günbatımı manzarası hakkında şunları yazar:

Son olarak, akşam etkisi--sarılaşan bir gökyüzü önünde biraz buğday ve iki siyah armut ağacı, ve menekşe arka planda kasvetli bir yeşillikle kuşatılmış şato.
Aşağıda gösterildiği gibi, Van Gogh'un tüm çift-kare tuvalleri çarpıcı ve cesur renklere sahiptir ve Auvers Şatosu ve günbatımı manzarası da bilhassa çarpıcı sarı gökyüzü ile bu özelliktedir. Ronald Pickvance resimdeki günbatımından bahsederken, Arles ve Saint-Rémy dönemlerinin aksine, Van Gogh'un Auvers-sur-Oise döneminde güneşi hiçbir zaman olduğu gibi tasvir etmediğine dikkat çeker.1

Auvers Şatosu onyedinci yüzyılda yapılmıştır ve konu olduğu tek Van Gogh resmi budur.
