Vincent van Gogh's series of self-portraits has given the world an excellent and insightful glimpse at the face and enigmatic personality of the great artist.

Over the years, however, a number of other painters have used Vincent van Gogh as a subject for their own portraits--both during Vincent's lifetime as well as long after his death. The works of the painters below, renowned artists in their own right, provide us with an interesting look at Van Gogh through the eyes of others. Note the facial expression and body language of Vincent in the Pissarro work. Lucien Pissarro was a contemporary and friend of Vincent's as well as a keen observer. This Pissarro sketch is extremely effective in conveying the complex nature of Vincent van Gogh during his time in Paris--stubborn, opinionated and yet often greatly admiring of the talent and aspirations of many of his fellow artists.

The list below is by no means complete. I've seen a few very interesting contemporary portraits of Van Gogh done with new technologies using computer generation. I hope to make ongoing additions to this collection in the time to come.
