En esta ocasión quiero platicarte de mi visita al Musée d'Orsay en Paris. En el museo tienen 23 pinturas al oleo tuyas, sin embargo cuando visité el museo el pasado 14 de diciembre sólo estaban en exhibición 18. Como en este museo si pude tomar fotografías de tus cuadros, te envio un plano de localización de las pinturas en la sala del museo, conforme con la siguiente numeración::

Quiero platicarte que vi algunos cuadros de Millet quien influyó en tus pinturas, aunque uno que siempre me ha gustado es: Des Glaneuses, que pintó Millet en 1857 y que pudo ser la inspiración para alguna de estas pinturas:

1. Campesinos recogiendo papas (F0694/JH1922) o
2. Dos campesinas plantando en un campo con nieve (F0695/JH1923)

Sabes bien que uno de mis cuadros favoritos es tu pintura Mediodia: Descansando del Trabajo (después de Millet) (F0686/JH1881) que copiaste de un dibujo de Millet en colores pastel y crayón. Recordarás que le comentaste a Theo que "Mientras más lo pienso encuentro una mayor justificación para tratar de reproducir algunos de las obras de Millet que él no tuvo tiempo para pintar al óleo. Trabajar en sus dibujos o en sus grabados en madera no es pura y sencillamente copiar. Más bien es traducir -en otro lenguaje- la impresión de la luz y sombra del blanco y negro (T623)"

In this letter I want to talk about my visit to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The museum has 23 of your paintings, however, when I visited it last December 14th, there was only 18 on exhibition. As in this museum I could take photos of your paintings, I prepared a plane of the location of the paintings at the museum according with the following numbers:

I want to tell you I saw some Millet's paintings. One of these is Des Glaneuses, painted in 1857, which could be your inspiration for some of your works:

1. Peasants Lifting Potatoes (F0694/JH1922), or
2. Two Peasant Women Digging in Field with Snow (F0695/JH1923)

You know one of my favourites paintings is Noon: Rest from Work (after Millet) (F0686/JH1881) you copied from a pastel and black conté crayon drawing of Millet. You will remember your comment to Theo "The more I think about it, the more I think there is justification for trying to reproduce some Millet's things which he himself had no time to paint in oil. Working thus on his drawings or on his woodcuts is not purely and simply copying. Rather it is translating -into another language- the impressions of light and shade in black and white (T623)"
