Vincent van Gogh é famoso pelas quase 900 pinturas que produziu em apenas dez anos como artista. Seus esboços e aquarelas, da mesma forma, se tornaram muito bem conhecidos. É importante lembrar, porém, que Van Gogh produziu trabalhos admiráveis nos seus esboços em cartas. Ao longo de sua carreira como artista, Vincent manteve uma correspondência cálida e afetuosa com seu irmão, Theo. Em muitas das cartas para Theo (e também a outras pessoas) Vincent desenhou esboços dentro das próprias cartas--como uma forma de mostrar como seu trabalho estava progredindo.

Nas tabelas abaixo estão listados todos os 132 esboços em cartas de Vincent van Gogh. Estes trabalhos são, de muitas formas, tão admiráveis quanto os óleos mais famosos de Van Gogh. É possível acompanhar o progresso contínuo de Vincent como artista e observar as sutilezas, numa visão íntima sobre sua arte. Existe uma atenção surpreendente nos detalhes e até no uso de cores (veja (see Honesty in a Vase, por exemplo) em seus esboços. Como resultado, o incrível conteúdo das cartas e as delicadas obras-primas nelas contidas, fizeram das cartas de Van Gogh obras de arte por si próprias.
