"CARTA A THEO: ACERCA DEL AMOR"

En esta serie de Artículos "Carta a Theo" utilizaré frases de las cartas de Vincent a su hermano en donde hable acerca de un tema determinado. En la primera carta, Vincent habla "Acerca del Amor". Por supuesto, trato de "ligar" las frases para procurar que parezca una sola carta escrita por Vincent. También pondré el número de la carta de Vincent en la que aparece la frase siguiendo la nomenclatura de: T### (si en algún momento escribo T?, se debe a que el libro del que tomé la frase no hace referencia al número o fecha, por lo que no he encontrado cuál es el que le corresponde). En las imágenes en color sepia, trato de "reproducir" la carta con texto similar a la escritura manuscrita de Vincent, sólo que en esta ocasión las imágenes no son muy buenas por lo que preferí de todas formas incluir el texto.

Estimado Theo:

"Estoy contento de que hayas leido L'amour de Michelet y que lo hayas entendido tan bien. Un libro como este nos enseña que hay mucho más en el amor de lo que la gente supone generalmente” (T20), aunque también es necesario pensar que "El camino es estrecho, la puerta es estrecha y pocos la encuentran" (T136).

Pero "Probablemente ¿estás también enamorado, Theo?, quisiera que lo estuvieras porque, créeme, aún estas pequeñas miserias tienen su valor. A veces uno se encuentra desconsolado, hay momentos en los cuales uno se cree en el infierno, pero - hay aún otras cosas mejores relacionadas. Existen tres grados:

1. No amar y no ser amado.

2. Amar y no ser correspondido (éste es mi caso).

3. Amar y ser amado.

En cuanto a mí, creo que el segundo grado vale más que el primero; pero el tercero... ¡es lo máximo!(T153).

Considero que "El amor, en efecto, es algo positivo, algo fuerte, algo a tal punto real, que es tan imposible para el que ama arrancar este sentimiento como atentar contra su propia vida" (T154), pero "Hay una frase, sin embargo, y tú la conoces: '¡Es necesario haber amado, después perder el amor, y luego amar de nuevo!'” (T154).

"...precisamente porque el amor es tan fuerte, nosotros en cambio no somos generalmente lo bastante fuertes en nuestra juventud (quiero decir, 17, 18, 20 años) como para poder mantener derecho nuestro timón. Ya ves, las pasiones son las velas del pequeño barco" (T157).

Creo que "Si sigues amando sinceramente lo que verdaderamente es digno de amor, y no el amor en cosas insignificantes y vacías, vas a obtener, poco a poco, más luz y será cada vez más fuerte" (T121).

Aunque "A veces uno se siente solo y desea tener amigos, pero uno se equivoca... "(T?).

Quiero decirte lo que pienso. "¿Sabes qué se necesita para liberarte de este cautiverio?, se necesita afecto profundo y serio. Entre hermanos, entre amigos, quererse es lo que abre la prisión, por algún poder supremo, por un encanto poderoso. Pero el que no tiene esto se queda encerrado en la prisión. Cuando se renueva el afecto, renace la vida" (T133).

Es necesario tomar en cuenta que "Quien ama vive, quien vive trabaja, quien trabaja tiene comida" (T?).

¿Recuerdas que "Richepín dijo alguna vez: el amor al arte hace perder el amor verdadero"? (T462). Aunque a veces pienso que "Lo posible pasional significa poco para mi; en tanto que sin embargo queda, me atrevo a creer, la potencia de sentirse ligado a los otros seres humanos con los cuales hay que vivir" (T590).

"Bueno ¿sabes lo que espero cada vez que me pongo a tener esperanzas?, que la familia sea para ti lo que es para mi la naturaleza, los montones de tierra, la hierba, el trigo amarillo, el aldeano, es decir que encuentres en tu amor por la gente, no solamente de qué trabajar sino de qué consolarte y rehacerte cuando haya necesidad" (T604).

"LETTER TO THEO: ABOUT LOVE "

In this series of Articles: "Letter to Theo", I will use Vincent's phrases from his letters to his brother where he talks about one specific theme. In the first one, Vincent talks "About Love". Of course, I will try to "link" the phrases in order to get a letter as if it was written by Vincent. I will incorporate the letter number where I found the phrase, using the nomenclature of: T### (if somewhere I write T?, it is because in the book I have got the phrase there is no mention to the letter's number or date, though I have not found which it is). At the sepia's colored images included, I try to "simulate" the letter with Vincent's handwriting, but in this first "experiment" I could not get as good images as I want, and I preferred to include the text with a PC's font.

Dear Theo

"I am glad you have read L'amour from Michelet and that you understand him so well. Such a book teaches us that there is much more love than people generally suppose” (T20), but it is very important to think "The path is narrow, the door is narrow, and there are few who find it" (T136).

But "Theo, are you perhaps in love too? I wish you were, for believe me, even its little miseries have their value. One is sometimes in despair, there are moments when one seems to be in hell, but - there are also other and better things connected with it. There are three stages:

1. Not to love and not to be loved.

2. To love and not to be loved in return (which is my case).

3. To love and to be loved.

Now, I tell you the second stage is better than the first - but the third, that is the best!" (T153).

I think "...love is something so positive, so strong, so real that it is as imposible for one who loves to take back that feeling as it is to take his own life" (T154), but "there is a saying, and you know it, 'One must have loved, then unloved, then love again!'” (T154).

"...just because love is so strong, generally in our youth (I mean at 17, 18 or 20 years) we are not strong enough to keep going straight!. The passions are the little ship's sails, you know" (T157).

I think "If one keeps on loving faithfully what is really worth loving, and does not waste one's love on insignificant and unworthy and meaningless things, one will gradually get more light and grow stronger" (T121).

But "Sometimes one feels alone and would like to have friends, but maybe one is wrong... "(T?).

I want to tell you what I thought. "Do you know what frees one from this captivity? It is very deep, serious affection. Being friends, being brothers, love, that is what opens the prison by some supreme power, by some magic force. Without this, one remains in prison. Where sympathy is renewed, life is restored" (T133).

It is very important to know "Who loves live, who lives work, who works feeds oneself" (T?).

Do you remember "it was Richepín who said somewhere: The love of art makes one lose real love"? (T462). But sometimes I think "The passionate factor is no great matter to me, as long as the power remains, as I dare hope, of feeling affection for the fellow creatures with whom one must live" (T590).

"Well, do you know what I hope for, once I let myself begin to hope? It is that a family will be for you what nature, the cloths of earth, the grass, the yellow wheat, the peasant, are for me, that is to say, that you may find in your love for people something not only to work for, but to comfort and restore you when there is need for it" (T604).
