"AUTORRETRATO CON PINTURA JAPONESA"

"AUTORRETRATO ENFRENTE DEL CABALLETE"

"AUTORRETRATOS CON OREJA VENDADA"

"VERÁS QUE ESTOY MUY OCUPADO CONMIGO MISMO POR AHORA, QUIERO TRATAR DE PINTAR MI PROPIO AUTORRETRATO POR ESCRITO. EN PRIMER LUGAR, QUIERO ENFATIZAR EL HECHO DE QUE UNO MISMO PUEDE PROPORCIONAR MOTIVOS PARA OBTENER RETRATOS MUY DIFERENTES".

CARTA DE VINCENT A WIL No. 4. c. 22 Junio 1888.

(T571). He encontrado copia de esta pintura en los libros: 1 (P 223), 3 (P 160), 11 (P 51), 15 (P 189), 22 (P 94) y 27 (P 49).

"SELF-PORTRAITS (Part IV)"

"SELF-PORTRAIT WITH A JAPANESE PRINT"

"SELF-PORTRAIT IN FRONT OF THE EASEL"

"SELF-PORTRAITS WITH BANDAGED EAR"

"SEEING THAT I AM SO BUSILY OCCUPIED WITH MYSELF JUST NOW, I WANT TO TRY TO PAINT MY SELF-PORTRAIT IN WRITING. IN THE FIRST PLACE I WANT TO EMPHASIZE THE FACT THAT ONE AND THE SAME PERSON MAY FURNISH MOTIFS FOR VERY DIFFERENT PORTRAITS".

VINCENT'S LETTER TO WIL No. 4. c. 22 June 1888.

In this document, I present information about four Self-Portraits, which I could not grouped in one subject, though I included the painted "with a Japanese print" as a background, the one Vincent painted himself "in front of the Easel", and the two canvases "with Bandaged Ear" (see Table I).

"Self-Portrait with a Japanese print" (F0319/JH1333) was painted by Vincent during the Autumm of 1887, where Vincent confirmed us his interested about Japanese's works. I have found copy of this canvas at books: 3 (P 114) and 22 (P 74).

The "Self-Portrait in front of the Easel" (F0522/JH1356) was painted at the beginning of 1888 in Paris. "Here I give a conception of mine, which is the result of a portrait I painted in the mirror, and which is now in Theo's possession. A pinkish-gray face with green eyes, ash-coloured hair, wrinkles on the forehead and around the mouth, stiff, wooden, a very red beard, considerably neglected and mournful, but the lips are full, a blue peasant's blouse of coarse linen, and a palette with citron yellow, vermilion, malachite green, cobalt blue, in short all the colours on the palette except the orange beard, but only whole colours. The figure against a grayish-white wall" (W4). I have a copy of this Self-Portrait at the books: 1 (P 120), 3 (P 116), 5 (P 61), 11 (P 19), 15 (P 99), 16 (P 12), 22 (P 80), 23 (P 13), 28 (P 41) and 29 (P 10 and 85).

"Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear" (F0527/JH1657) was painted during January 1889. Vincent included a Japanese print at the background. This painting was prepared after Vincent recovered because he cut part of his ear. Gauguin explained: "Van Gogh had reentered the house and immediately cut off the lower part of his ear. It must have taken some time to stanch the bleeding since the next day a number of washcloths soaked with blood were strewn about the two ground-floor rooms" (Paul Gauguin. Oviri, écrits d'un sauvage). I have copy of this canvas in the books: 1 (P 337), 3 (P 158), 4 (P 2), 6 (P 59), 18 (P 55), 22 (P 92), 24 (P 54) and 29 (P 113).

"Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe" (F0529/JH1658) was painted during January 1889. As Vincent painted these two Self-Portraits "with Bandaged Ear" reflected in the mirror, his right ear appears bandaged instead the left, which was the injured one. Vincent explained Theo about Gauguin: "Has Gauguin ever read Tartarin in the Alps, and does he remember Tartarin's illustrious companion from Tarascon, who had such imagination that he imagined in a flash a complete imaginary Switzerland?" (T571). I have found copy of this painting in the books: 1 (P 223), 3 (P 160), 11 (P 51), 15 (P 189), 22 (P 94) and 27 (P 49).

All these three canvases could be "visited" through the section: "The Paintings" (Self-Portraits) "Self-Portraits", of OUR VAN GOGH GALLERY: http://www.vggallery.com
