VINCENT VAN GOGH CARTA A THEO No. 13. Enero 1874.
En esta nota presento información acerca de los siete autorretratos donde Vincent se pintó utilizando un sombrero de paja, los cuales podemos "visitar" y analizar con mayor detalle a través de la sección de autorretratos de NUESTRA GALERÍA. Presento también comentarios sobre la pintura: "El Pintor en su camino al trabajo" (F0448/JH1491), donde Vincent aparece también con un sombrero de paja (ver Tabla I).
El primer "Autorretrato con sombrero de paja" (F0061v/JH1302) lo pintó en el verano de 1887 en París. Bernard Denvir (Libro 22) considera que en este autorretrato "La expresión es reflexiva". Tengo una copia de este cuadro en los libros: 3 (P 76) y 22 (P 56).
"Autorretrato con sombrero de paja y pipa" (F0179v/JH1300) que Vincent pintó también en el verano de 1887. En este cuadro Vincent luce serio, tal vez enojado. He encontrado copia de esta pintura en los libros: 3 (P 58) y 22 (P 54).
Otro "Autorretrato con Sombrero de paja" (F0294/JH1209) lo pintó Vincent entre marzo y abril de 1887. Vincent aparece con saco azul, sobre un fondo azul. Vincent escribió alguna vez que "Uno debe conocer la estructura de las imágenes a fondo para obtener la expresión" (T281). Tengo copia de esta pintura en los libros: 3 (P 62), 22 (P 44) y 29 (P 58).
El cuarto "Autorretrato con Sombrero de paja" (F0365v/JH1354) lo pintó en el invierno del 1887/1888. Los trazos del cuadro presentan formas similares a la que utilizó en el cuadro: "Autorretrato con Sombrero de fieltro gris" (F0344/JH1353). Bernard Denvir (libro 22) opina: "...y la influencia del puntillismo puede observarse con el uso de pequeñas pinceladas,... ". Tengo copia de esta pintura en los libros: 3 (P 94) y 22 (P 64).
Con relación al "Autorretrato con Sombrero de paja" (F0469/JH1310), que Vincent pintó en el verano del 1887, Bernard Denvir (libro 22) escribió: "Es difícil decir si van Gogh considera este cuadro terminado", debido a la falta de detalle en el fondo de la pintura, que sólo tiene unas pinceladas azules sobre el fondo amarillo. Tengo copia de esta pintura en los libros: 3 (P 78) y 22 (P 58).
"Autorretrato con Pipa y Sombrero de paja" (F0524/JH1565) que Vincent pintó en agosto de 1888, recién que había llegado a Arles. Tengo copia de esta pintura en los libros: 3 (P 118), 22 (P 82) y 29 (P 89). El "Autorretrato con Sombrero de paja" (F0526/JH1309) lo pintó en el verano del 1887. Pascal Bonafoux (libro 3) utiliza esta frase de Vincent: "...quiero mostrar por medio de mi obra lo que hay en el corazón de excéntrico, de una nulidad" (T218). Tengo copia de esta pintura en los libros: 1 (P 115), 3 (P 80) y 22 (P 60).
El cuadro: "El Pintor en su camino al trabajo" ( F0448/JH1491), pintado en julio de 1888, fue destruido en un incendio durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Con relación a este cuadro, Vincent escribió: "...aquí está un borrador de un autorretrato donde voy cargado con cajas, pinceles y lienzos camino a Tarascon" (T524). Como Vincent viajaba constantemente, alguna vez escribió: "Siempre siento que soy un viajero, yendo a algún lugar y a algún destino" (T518).

VINCENT VAN GOGH LETTER TO THEO No. 13 January 1874.
In this note, I present information about seven Self-Portraits where Vincent painted himself using a straw hat. Remember we can "visit" and analyze with detail these ones, in the section Self-Portraits of OUR GALLERY. I include some comments about the painting: "The Painter on his way to work" ( F0448/JH1491), where Vincent has a straw hat too (see Table I).
The first: "Self-Portrait with Straw" (F0061v/JH1302) was painted during the Summer of 1887 in Paris. Bernard Denvir (Book 22) considers: "The expression is reflective" I have a copy of this Self-Portrait at the books: 3 (P 76) and 22 (P 56).
"Self-Portrait with Straw Hat and Pipe" (F0179v/JH1300) was painted by Vincent during the Summer of 1887. Vincent looks so serious and maybe he was anger. I have found copy of this canvas at books: 3 (P 58) and 22 (P 54).
Another "Self-Portrait with Straw Hat" (F0294/JH1209) was painted during March/April 1887. Vincent has a blue suit, and he painted himself against a blue background. Vincent wrote once: "One must know the structure of the figures so thoroughly to get the expression" (T281). I have copy of this canvas in the books: 3 (P 62), 22 (P 44) and 29 (P 58).
The fourth "Self-Portrait with Straw Hat" (F0365v/JH1354) was painted during the Winter 1887/1888. The brushstrokes used are similar to that of "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat" (F0344/JH1353). Bernard Denvir (book 22) explains: "...and the influence of the Pointillists can be seen in the use of small brushstrokes,...". I have copy of this canvas in the books: 3 (P 92) y 22 (P 64).
About the "Self-Portrait with Straw Hat" (F0469/JH1310), painted during the Summer 1887, Bernard Denvir (book 22) wrote: "It is difficult to say whether van Gogh considered this to be finished", because of the lack of detail in its background, which has just blue brushstrokes against a yellow background. I have copy of this canvas in the books: 3 (P 78) y 22 (P 58).
"Self-Portrait with Pipe and Straw Hat" (F0524/JH1565) Vincent painted in August 1888, shortly after his arrival in Arles. I have copy of this canvas in the books: 3 (P 118), 22 (P 82) and 29 (P 89). The "Self-Portrait with Straw Hat" (F0526/JH1309) was painted during the Summer of 1887. Pascal Bonafoux (book 3) used in his book this Vincent's phrase: "...I should want my work to show what is in the heart of such an eccentric, of such a nobody" (T218). I have copy of this canvas in the books: 1 (P 115), 3 (P 80) and 22 (P 60).
The canvas: "The painter on his way to work" ( F0448/JH1491), painted in July of 1888, was destroyed by fire during the Second World war. Related to this painting, Vincent wrote: "...there is a rough sketch I made of myself laden with boxes, props and canvas on the sunny road to Tarascon" (T524). As Vincent traveled constantly, once he wrote: "I always feel I am a traveler, going somewhere and to some destination" (T518).
