"Pero hay algo adicional que me gustaría tener --quiero ser capaz de pintar un retrato en una mañana o una tarde, lo cual he hecho ocasionalmente, relacionado con ese tema. Este tipo de trabajos no le evitan a uno el trabajar en otro tipo de pinturas por algún tiempo"... pero "...actualmente soy un pintor paisajista, cuando en la realidad la pintura de retrato me satisface más"... "Verás que ahora estoy muy ocupado conmigo mismo, quiero tratar de pintar mi autorretrato por escrito. En primer lugar, quiero enfatizar el hecho de que uno y una misma persona puede generar motivos para realizar retratos muy diferentes" (W4).
Vincent pintó tres autorretratos con "Sombrero de fieltro Gris" (ver Tabla I). El primer "Autorretrato con sombrero de fieltro gris" (F0295/JH1211) lo pintó en el invierno de 1886 a 1887 en París. Bernard Denvir (Libro 22) considera que "Sus ojos lucen intensos y alertas, tal vez agresivos". Tengo una copia de este cuadro en los libros: 3 (P 82) y 22 (P 62).
Otro "Autorretrato con sombrero de fieltro gris" (F0296/JH1210) lo pintó Vincent entre marzo y abril de 1887. Bernard Denvir (Libro 22) considera que este autorretrato es el primero "...que muestra el efecto del Impresionismo incluido en el estilo de van Gogh". He encontrado copia de esta pintura en los libros: 3 (P 60), 10 (P 5) y 22 (P 40). J.B. de la Faille pensó que este cuadro más que un autorretrato de Vincent es un retrato de su hermano Theo. Del tercer "Autorretrato con Sombrero de fieltro gris" (F0344/JH1353), Richard Mühlberger (Libro 23) explica: "El patrón de pequeñas líneas radiantes de color que parten de sus ojos en círculos alrededor de su cabeza, las realiza van Gogh en su muy propio estilo nuevo", tal vez porque Vincent pensaba que: "... el pintor del futuro es un colorista como no lo ha habido todavía." (T482). Tengo copia de esta pintura en varios libros: 3 (P 84), 4 (P 35), 11 (P 16), 15 (P 85), 18 (P 12), 22 (P 76), 23 (P 13), 27 (P 26 y Portada).

"VAN GOGH WAS ALONE. AND THE SELF-PORTRAITS HE PAINTED WERE THOSE OF HIS SECLUSION. TO PAINT ONESELF WAS TO PLUMB THE VERY DEPHTS OF ONE'S ISOLATION AND THEN TO CONTINUE DESPERATELY TO PAINT DESPITE WHAT ONE FOUND HERE.".

"And there is something additional that I should like to have--I want to be able to paint a portrait in one morning or in one afternoon, which I have done occasionally, for that matter. This kind of work does not prevent one from working on other pictures for a long time"... but "...today I am a landscape painter, whereas in reality portrait painting would suit me better"... "Seeing that I am so busily occupied with myself just now, I want to try to paint my self-portrait in writing. In the first place I want to emphasize the fact that one and the same person may furnish motifs for very different portraits" (W4).
Vincent painted three Self-Portraits with "Grey Felt Hat" (see Table I). The first one: "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat" (F0295/JH1211) was painting during the Winter 1886/1887 in Paris. Bernard Denvir (Book 22) considers: "His eyes look intense and alert, even aggressive" I have a copy of this Self-Portrait at the books: 3 (P 82) and 22 (P 62).
Other "Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat" (F0296/JH1210) was painted around March/April 1887. Bernard Denvir (Book 22) considers this Self-Portrait is the first "... to show that Impressionism exerted on van Gogh's style". I have found copy of this canvas at books: 3 (P 60), 10 (P 5) and 22 (P 40). J.B. de la Faille thought this painting is a Theo's portrait instead of a Vincent' Self-Portrait.
