"Tengo en preparación el retrato de la esposa de Roulin en el que trabajaba antes de estar enfermo." "Puse en el interior los rojos, desde el rosa hasta el anaranjado, el cual subía en el amarillo hasta el limón, con los verdes claros y oscuros. Me alegraría muchísimo poder terminarlo, pero me temo que ella no querrá posar mientras siga ausente su marido." (T573)

"Tengo una tela de Berceuse, precisamente la que trabajaba cuando vino mi enfermedad a interrumpirse. De aquella, poseo igualmente hoy dos pruebas" ... "Una mujer vestida de verde con cabellos anaranjados se destaca contra un fondo verde con flores rosas. Ahora estas disparatadas agujas de rosa crudo, anaranjado crudo, verde crudo, están atenuadas por bemoles de rojos y verdes" (T574) "He puesto hoy en preparación una tercera Berceuse. Se muy bien que no está ni dibujada ni pintada tan correctamente como la de Bourguerau; cosa que casi lamento, ya que aspiro a ser correcto en serio" (T575).

"Quizás en la Berceuse hay un ensayo de pequeña música del color de aquí; está mal pintada y los cromos del bazar salen infinitamente mejor pintados técnicamente; pero aún así..." (T576). "Falta saber que si los pones en ese sentido, o sea la Berceuse en el medio y los girasoles, es decir, las dos telas, a derecha e izquierda, pueden formar un tríptico. Y entonces los tonos amarillos y anaranjados de la cabeza cobran más esplendor por la vecindad de los paneles amarillos" (T592). En la carta Vincent envió a Theo un dibujo de como quería se colocaran las pinturas en el tríptico. Este dibujo lo puedes ver en el libro 7 (P 363) o en el 15 (P 195).

Vincent realizó cinco pinturas al óleo tituladas "LA BERCEUSE" que podemos ver en los Museos:

• KRÖLLER-MÜLLER MUSEUM, OTTERLO, HOLANDA (F0504/JH1655). Diciembre 1888. Una copia de esta pintura se puede ver en los libros 2 (P 23), 4 (P 55), 15 (P 197) y 28 (P 24) que se mencionan en la Bibliografía.
• METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART. NUEVA YORK, EUA. (F0505/JH1669) Enero 1889. Tengo una copia de este cuadro en los libros: 1 (P 192), 4 (P 55), 15 (P 22) y 24 (P 43).
• ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO, EUA (F0506/JH1670). Enero 1889. Copia en el libro 1 (P 172).
• VAN GOGH MUSEUM, AMSTERDAM, HOLANDA (F0507/JH1672). Marzo 1889. Copia en el libro 11 (P 49) y en el 15 (P 199). En este libro 15 (P 195) y en el libro 7 (P 363) puedes ver el dibujo del tríptico descrito en la carta T592.
• MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, BOSTON, EUA (F0508/JH1671). Febrero 1889. Copia en el libro 5 (P 97).

Vincent pintó un "RETRATO DE MADAME AUGUSTINE ROULIN" (F0503/JH1646) y dos retratos de "MAMÁ ROULIN CON SU BEBÉ" (F0490/JH1637) y (F0491/JH1638), que podemos ver en los Museos:

• COLLECTION OSKAR REINHART, WINTERTHUR, SUIZA (Colección Privada) (F0503/JH1646). Noviembre-Diciembre 1888. No he encontrado copia de este cuadro en ninguno de mis libros.
• PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART, EUA (F0490/JH1637). Noviembre-Diciembre 1888. Del cual tampoco tengo copia.
• METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART, NUEVA YORK, EUA (F0491/JH1638). Noviembre-Diciembre 1888. De este he encontrado una copia en el libro 5 (P 89).

Melissa McQuillan explica: " La Berceuse (quien mece la cuna), fue considerada como elemento central en un tríptico propuesto (flanqueada por dos versiones de la serie de Girasoles ) como una pieza de altar moderna del ideal maternal." (Libro No 19).

"BUT I HAVE MADE PORTRAITS OF A WHOLE FAMILY, THAT OF THE POSTMAN, WHOSE HEAD I HAD DONE PREVIOUSLY, - THE MAN, HIS WIFE, THE BABY, THE LITTLE SON, AND THE SON OF SIXTEEN, ALL CHARACTERS ARE VERY FRENCH, THOUGH THE FIRST HAS THE LOOK OF A RUSSIAN".

"I am in the middle of a portrait of Roulin's wife on which I was working before getting sick". "I painted reds going to pink going to orange, which changed to yellows, then lemon with clear, dark greens. If I could finish that, that would give me great pleasure, but I fear that she will not want to pose any more, because of her husband's absence." (T573).

"I think I have already told you that besides these I have a canvas of 'La Berceuse', the very one I was working on when my illness interrupted me. I now have two copies of this one too." ... "A woman in green with orange hair standing out against a background of green with pink flowers. Now these discordant sharps of crude pinks, crude orange, and crude green are softened by flats of red and green." (T574) "Today I am working on a third 'Berceuse.' I know very well that it is neither drawn nor painted as correctly as a Bouguereau, and I rather regret this, because I have an earnest desire to be correct." (T575).

"Perhaps there's an attempt to get all the music of the colour here into 'La Berceuse.' It is badly painted and technically the chromos in the little shops are infinitely better painted, but all the same . . . ." (T576). "You must realize that if you arrange them this way, say 'La Berceuse' in the middle and the two canvases of sunflowers to the right and left, it makes a sort of triptych. And then the yellow and orange tones of the head will gain in brilliance by the proximity of the yellow wings." (T592). In the same letter, Vincent sent Theo a drawing, let him know how to develop the tryptic. You can see the drawing in the book 7 (P 363) and in book 15 (P 195).
