"Ahora estoy preparándome con otro modelo: un cartero en su uniforme azul, engalanado de oro, gran figura barbuda, muy socrática. Republicano furioso como el viejo Tanguy. Un hombre más interesante que muchas personas" (T516). "La última semana no he hecho uno sino dos retratos de mi cartero, uno de medio cuerpo con manos y la cabeza de tamaño natural; el buen hombre no aceptó dinero, pero era más caro comiendo, bebiendo conmigo y le di, además, ‘La Linterna' de Rochefort. En fin, he ahí un mal pequeño y sin importancia, en comparación con lo muy bien que ha posado para esto...".(T518). "Una persona socrática, no el menos socrático como para ser adicto al licor y tener mucho color como resultado" (B14).
". . . lo vi un día cantando La Marsellesa, y pensé que regresaba al 89, pero no el año próximo, sino el de hace noventa y nueve años. Era como de Delacroix, de Daumier, del más antiguo y puro holandés" (T520). "Ahora he hecho el gran retrato del cartero, su cabeza, que te adjunto, es una sola sesión. Y bien este es mi fuerte: hacer un buen hombre: toscamente en una sesión. Si fuera capaz, mi querido hermano, lo haría siempre así, bebería con el primero que llegara y lo pintaría; pero no a la acuarela, sino al óleo, durante una sesión, como Daumier". (T525).
Vincent realizó un dibujo a lápiz y pintó al óleo seis retratos del "flemático e indescriptiblemente jubiloso" (Libro No. 1) cartero Joseph Roulin:

El cuadro F0432/JH1522 es probablemente el más conocido de los retratos del cartero. En éste predomina el color azul: el saco y el sombrero son de color azul marino, en tanto que el fondo es azul pálido. "El cartero... está sentado recto, pero parece que se acomodó confortablemente dentro de los muebles tan rígidamente colocados." (Libro No 6).
El F0433/JH1524 presenta sólo la cabeza del cartero, también en su uniforme azul con fondo azul claro, sin la mesa ni la silla del cuadro anterior. El retrato F0434/JH1647 tiene colores más pastel y menos detalles en el rostro, sobre un fondo amarillo.
Los cuadros F0435/JH1674, F0436/JH1675 y F0439/JH1673 tienen como fondo una pared llena de flores, al igual que en "La Berceuse". Difiere el color verde del fondo en los tres cuadros: verde limón en el primero, verde olivo en el segundo y verde claro en el tercero. En el F0435/JH1674 se observa la firma de Vincent en la parte superior izquierda.

"Now I am preparing a canvas with another model: a postman in a blue uniform trimmed with gold, a man more interesting than most (T516) "Last week I did not only one but two portraits of my postman, a half length with the hands, and a head, life size. The good fellow, as he would not accept money, cost more eating and drinking with me, and I gave him Rochefort's ‘The Lantern'".(T518). "A Socratic type, none the less Socratic for being addicted to liquor and having a high color as a result." (B14).
"I saw him one day singing the Marseillaise, and I thought of seeing 89, No not the next year, but that of it ninety nine years ago. It was of Delacroix, Daumier, straight from the old Dutch" (T520). "The head of the postman was done at a single sitting. But that's what I'm good at. I should always do it - drink with the first comer and paint him, and that not in water-colors but in oils, in a single setting, as Daumier". (T525).

The F0432/JH1522 painting is probably the Postman's portrait better known. Blue is the predominant color: suit and Postman's hat are dark blue, with a pale blue back. "The country postman... sits erect, but appears ill-at-ease in his attempts to accommodate himself comfortably amongst the confinement of the furniture." (Book No 6).
F0433/JH1524 has just the postman's head, with his blue uniform and pale blue back, but without the table and chair of the above mentioned. Portrait F0434/JH1647 has pastel colors, with less details in his face, against a yellow back.
Paintings F0435/JH1674, F0436/JH1675 and F0439/JH1673 are done with a green wall with flowers at the back, as in "La Berceuse". The green color of the back is different in the paintings: lemon in the first, olive green in the second and pale in the third one. F0435/JH1674 has Vincent's signature in the left upper part of the canvas.
