I want to explain you that in January, 1998 I discovered ***OUR*** page: "THE VINCENT VAN GOGH Gallery". Since then, I began to traveled through ***OUR*** page, trying to read all the information I could get about your paintings, drawings and life. The first time I navigated through, I was THE VISITOR NUMBER 086855.
Since then, I have been in contact with my Canadian friend David Brooks, the developer of ***OUR*** page, and with my Spaniard friend José Navarro, or Pepe. Till today, we have been writing a lot of e-mails and air mails, sharing information we have about your work and life.
In January 1999, one year later, I decided to make you this description about what I have found in ***OUR*** page, including part of the e-mails I have had with David and/or Pepe, trying to share with everybody through ***OUR*** page all the things we have discussed and what I have learned. At the same time, I want to explain to you the Content of some of the Sections included in ***OUR*** page.
The first e-mail I sent, it was to try to answer David a question included in the Section "ON-LINE FORUM", about "... a family tree of Roulin family from Arles. It shows Armand as having been born in 1875, but this would make him 13 when Van Gogh painted the two portraits of him. He looks considerably older than this. When exactly was Armand born?." I sent David some book references about it, with part of your letter to Theo (number 560. November, 1888): "But I have made portraits of a whole family, that of the postman whose head I had done previously--the man, his wife, the baby, the little boy, and the son of sixteen".
Later on, I asked David about the possibility to send him a document where I made a compilation of phrases from your letters to Theo. The document is already included in the "VISITOR SUBMISSIONS" section. Because the document is in Spanish, David told me he was sent a copy to Pepe, and, at the same time, he was going to include it in ***OUR*** page, and there is when I knew my friend Pepe through Internet.
When I sent David the document by air mail, I sent him some photos of the copies of your paintings I already have. Let me tell you that everybody can review all your paintings through the images included in the chapter: "PAINTINGS" of ***OUR*** page. At the same time, everybody can get a copy of "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS" database as David included on the "FREE DOWNLOAD" section of ***OUR*** page.
With the information included in the database, I looked for the Catalog numbers of the paintings as J. B. de la Faille (F number) and Jan Hulsker (JH number) have developed. At the same time, I can find in what Museum there are, or who is the current owner of each of your paintings.
The photos I sent to David, were from these copies of your paintings: i) "Olive Grove: Orange Sky" (F0586/JH1854); ii) "Noon: Rest from Work (After Millet)" (F0686/JH1881); iii) "Rocks with Oak Tree" (F0466/JH1489); and iv) A photo of a painting's copy I bought in the USA, but I did not remember the name. David answered me it was "View of Vessenots Near Auvers" (F0797/JH2003).
With "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS" database I have learned you made 876 paintings, and I can know where and when you painted or what is the size of each one, and in what Museum are currently located or which is the owner of the painting. In the Table 1, I send you a list of the location of your 876 paintings, as I can get from the database.

As you can see, 213 are in the van Gogh Museum at Amsterdam, 152 paintings are private owned, and there are 261 of your paintings in exhibition in 112 Museums around the world. I have been working with "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS" database, and I have the analysis of the numbers of paintings you have in exhibition in each Museum. In the Table 1, I have included just the Museums with 10 or more paintings, but I can tell you there are: 8 paintings in the Hermitage Museum, located in Russia, or there are 56 Museums or Institutions with just one painting each.
With "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS" database I can know how many of your paintings include flowers, with a breakdown in Sunflowers, Irises or as I decided, or I can get how many Self-portraits, Landscapes or Portraits you painted. I could know how many paintings you done by year or by month, or how many squared centimeters you painted, as Pepe investigated and as he included an article about this theme in the "VISITOR SUBMISSIONS".
On the other hand, with the "LETTERS DATABASE" of ***OUR*** page, I can know in what letters to Theo or to somebody else you explained something about a painting or drawing. For instance, about the painting: "Olive Grove: Orange Sky" (F0586/JH1854), I would find references to your letters to Theo: i) No. 615 (dated c. 21 November 1889) or ii) No. 621 (dated 3 January 1890). IN THE DATABASES MENTIONED, YOU COULD GET CROSS REFERENCES BETWEEN YOUR LETTERS, YOUR DRAWINGS AND YOUR PAINTINGS!.
David included too, a complete list of "SKETCHES", "WATERCOLOURS" and "LETTER SKETCHES", you made, including the most important information about each one. As you can imagine, in the "LETTERS SKETCHES" you can see in your PC an image of the sketches, you can find the Museum where they are exhibited, in what of your letters were included, and, sometimes, you can link to the copy of the letter, as it happens with the sketch of your "Bedroom in Arles" (JH1609), which through the list you can link to the letter No. 554 to Theo, and you will remember you wrote Theo:
"At last I can send you a little sketch to give you at least an idea of the way the work is shaping up. For today I am all right again. My eyes are still tired by then I had a new idea in my head and here is the sketch of it. Another size 30 canvas. This time it's just simply my bedroom,..."
Other section in ***OUR*** page is: "VISITOR SUBMISSIONS" where Pepe has included a document about Vincent every month, since December 1997. Pepe talks about: your paintings, your sickness, your family relations, about Kee, Sien, etc. About all the interesting things one can learn about you. There is another document "Postcard from Auvers sur Oise", written by Jane Tomlinson, where she includes some photos of the "Church at Auvers" (F0789/JH2006) and paintings she already made.
In this section, you can also find the documents I have sent David: I) "Vincent", where I tried to separated a lot of phrases from your letters to Theo in different themes as "Love and Friendship", "Death", "Life", and, of course, "Paintings"; ii) "Dear Vincent", the first letter I sent you, where I included some charcoal drawings where I tried to copy some of your paintings; and iii) "His life: written by Vincent and his friends", where I tried to make your Biography, including written material from your letters, or from some of your friends as Gauguin and Kerssemakers.
Let me tell you that last year I published two articles in the magazine of the "Mexican Institute of Chemical Engineers" (because I am a Chemical Engineer) about you: i) "Love and Friendship. Letter to Theo", where I put together some of your phrases as you sent to Theo about the theme; and ii) THE MOST IMPORTANT ARTICLE, at least for me, was about ***OUR*** page: "THE VINCENT VAN GOGH Gallery". It was reviewed and accepted in its content by David, and in the article, I tried to translate to Spanish and to explain in my own words, almost every section included in ***OUR*** page, as it was by the end of July 1998, when AROUND 194,000 VISITORS had been "navigating" through ***OUR*** page.
Fortunately for all the lovers of your work, ***OUR*** page currently includes: 2,450 PAGES AND 2,490 GRAPHICS, everybody can "visit" through the whole SECTIONS. By the end of January 1999, ***OUR*** PAGE HAS HAD MORE THAN 425,000 VISITORS.
Finally, I want to tell you, Vincent, that I appreciated a lot the opportunity to be in contact with your work and with your life through ***OUR*** page, because as always as I visit ***OUR*** page, I have found something new, or at least different, because David is always improving ***OUR*** page, so it is why I decided TO TRY TO VISIT THE MOST AS I CAN ***OUR*** PAGE, BECAUSE I WILL ENJOY ALWAYS TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE WORK AND THE LIFE OF VINCENT VAN GOGH!

Quiero explicarte que en Enero de 1998 descubrí ***NUESTRA*** página: "THE VINCENT VAN GOGH Gallery". Desde entonces, he viajado a través de ***NUESTRA*** página, tratando de leer toda la información que pueda obtener acerca de tus Pinturas, dibujos y sobre tu vida. La primera vez que navegué a través de ***NUESTRA*** página, fui EL VISITANTE NÚMERO 086855.
Desde entonces, he estado en contacto con mi amigo canadiense David Brooks, el creador de ***NUESTRA*** página, y con mi amigo español José Navarro, o Pepe. Hasta hoy, nos hemos enviado muchos e-mails y cartas por correo aéreo, donde hemos compartido información que tenemos acerca de tu obra y tu vida.
En enero 1999, un año después, decidí hacerte esta descripción acerca de lo que he encontrado ***NUESTRA*** página, incluyendo parte de los e-mails que he enviado o recibido de David y/o Pepe, tratando de compartir con todos los visitantes de ***NUESTRA*** página todas las cosas que he platicado y lo que he aprendido. Al mismo tiempo, quiero explicarte el Contenido de algunas Secciones incluidas en ***NUESTRA*** página.
En el primer e-mail que envié, traté de contestar a David una pregunta que incluyó en la Sección "ON-LINE FORUM", acerca de "... en un árbol genealógico de la familia Roulin de Arles. se muestra que Armand nació en 1875, en ese caso, hubiera tenido 13 años cuando Van Gogh pintó los dos retratos de Armand. Armand parece mayor que 13. ¿Cuándo nació exactamente Armand?." Envié a David algunas referencias de libros acerca de esto, y parte de una carta tuya a Theo (número 560. Noviembre, 1888): " Pero he hecho retratos de toda una familia; la del cartero del cual ya había hecho anteriormente la cabeza -el hombre, la mujer, el niño, el muchacho y el hijo de 16 años;
".Posteriormente, pregunté a David si podía enviarle un documento donde había realizado una compilación de frases de tus cartas a Theo. El documento lo incluyó David en la sección "VISITOR SUBMISSIONS". Como el documento está en español, David me comentó que había enviado una copia a Pepe, y que lo iba a incluir en ***NUESTRA*** página, fue en esta época cuando conocí a mi amigo Pepe a través de Internet.
Cuando le envié a David el documento por correo aéreo, envié también algunas fotos de copias que tengo de algunas de tus Pinturas. Déjame explicarte que cualquier persona puede ver todas tus Pinturas en imágenes que David ha incluido en la sección: "PAINTINGS" de ***NUESTRA*** página. Al mismo tiempo, cualquiera puede obtener una copia de la base de datos "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS" que David incluye en la sección "FREE DOWNLOAD" de ***NUESTRA*** página.
Con la información que incluye la base de datos, encontré el número de Catálogo de las Pinturas según las clasificó J. B. de la Faille (número F) y Jan Hulsker (número JH). Al mismo tiempo, puedo encontrar en el Museo en que se exhiben, o quién es el propietario de cada una de tus Pinturas.
Las fotos que envié a David, eran copias de estas Pinturas: i) "Olive Grove: Orange Sky" (F0586/JH1854); ii) "Noon: Rest from Work (After Millet)" (F0686/JH1881); iii) "Rocks with Oak Tree" (F0466/JH1489); y iv) Una foto de una copia que compré en Estados Unidos, pero que no recordaba el nombre. David me contestó que era "View of Vessenots Near Auvers" (F0797/JH2003).
Con la base de datos "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS", pude saber que hiciste 876 Pinturas al óleo, y puedo conocer también las dimensiones de cada una, en qué Museo se encuentran en la actualidad o quién es el dueño de cierta pintura. En la Tabla 1 (ver carta en Inglés), te incluyo el desglose de la localización de las 876 Pinturas, según pude obtener de la base de datos.
Como puedes ver, 213 están en el Museo de van Gogh en Amsterdam, 152 Pinturas pertenecen a colecciones particulares, y 261 de tus Pinturas se encuentran en exhibición en 112 Museos alrededor del mundo. He estado trabajando con la base de datos "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS", y te puedo decir el número de Pinturas que están en exhibición en cada uno de los Museos. En la Tabla 1, sólo incluyo los museos que tienen más de 10 Pinturas, pero podría explicarte que 8 Pinturas están en el Museo del Hermitage, en Rusia, o que hay un total de 56 museos o instituciones que sólo tienen una pintura tuya en su poder.
Con la base de datos "THE COMPLETE PAINTINGS" podría saber cuántas de tus Pinturas incluyen flores, desglosando en cuántas tiene Girasoles, Lirios o cualquier otra flor según quiera detallarlas, o cuántos Autorretratos pintaste, cuántos paisajes o Retratos. Puedo conocer cuántas Pinturas hiciste por año o por mes, o cuántos centímetros cuadrados pintaste, según analiza Pepe en un artículo que se encuentra incluido en la sección "VISITOR SUBMISSIONS".
Por otra parte, con la base de datos "LETTERS DATABASE" de ***NUESTRA*** página, puedo conocer en cuáles de tus cartas a Theo o a cualquier otra persona, le explicaste algo acerca de una de tus Pinturas o dibujos. Por ejemplo, de la pintura: "Olive Grove: Orange Sky" (F0586/JH1854), encontraría referencia a tus cartas a Theo: i) No. 615 (fechada c. 21 de Noviembre de 1889) o ii) No. 621 (fechada 3 de enero de 1890). ¡CON LAS BASES DE DATOS QUE TE MENCIONO, PODRÍAS OBTENER REFERENCIAS CRUZADAS ENTRE TUS CARTAS, TUS DIBUJOS Y TUS PINTURAS!
David incluye también, una lista completa de tus "SKETCHES", "WATERCOLOURS" y "LETTER SKETCHES", donde menciona la información más importante acerca de cada uno. Como podrás imaginarte, en la lista de "LETTERS SKETCHES" puedes ver en tu PC la imagen de todos los dibujos incluidos en tus cartas, el Museo donde se exhiben, y en qué carta los incluiste, y, algunas veces, puedes ir a la carta donde incluiste el dibujo, como sucede con el dibujo de tu "Bedroom in Arles" (JH1609), del cual puedes ir a la carta No. 554 a Theo y recordar lo que le escribiste:
"Finalmente, puedo enviarte un dibujo que al menos podrá darte una idea de lo que estoy trabajando. Por ahora estoy bien. Mis ojos están fatigados, sin embargo tengo en mi mente una idea en relación al borrador que te envío. Otro cuadro de 30. Esta vez es solamente mi recámara,,,"
Otra sección de ***NUESTRA*** página es la de: "VISITOR SUBMISSIONS" donde Pepe ha incluido un documento acerca de Vincent cada mes, desde diciembre de 1997. Pepe habla sobre tus Pinturas, tu enfermedad, tus relaciones familiares, o acerca de Kee, Sien, etc. En realidad es acerca de todo lo más interesante que uno debe aprender acerca de ti. También está otro documento "Postcard from Auvers sur Oise", escrito por Jane Tomlinson, donde incluye fotos de la "Church at Auvers" (F0789/JH2006) y Pinturas de la iglesia que ella hizo.
En esta sección, podrás encontrar los documentos que he enviado a David: i) "Vincent", donde trato de agrupar varias frases de tus cartas a Theo en diferentes temas como "Amor y Amistad", "Muerte", "Vida", y, por supuesto, "Cuadros"; ii) "Estimado Vincent", la primera carta que te envié, donde incluyo algunos dibujos al carbón en los que trato de copiar alguna de tus Pinturas; y iii) "Su vida: escrita por Vincent y sus amigos ", donde trato de hacer una biografía tuya, incluyendo material escrito en tus cartas, o `por alguno de tus amigos como Gauguin y Kerssemakers.
Déjame contarte que el año pasado publiqué también dos artículos acerca de ti en la revista del "Instituto Mexicano de Ingenieros Químicos" (porque soy Ingeniero Químico): i) "Amor y Amistad. Carta a Theo", donde uní varias de tus frases que enviaste a Theo en tus cartas acerca de este tema; y ii) EL ARTÍCULO MÁS IMPORTANTE, al menos para mí, fue acerca de ***NUESTRA*** página: "THE VINCENT VAN GOGH Gallery". David revisó y aprobó el contenido de esta nota, donde trato de traducir al español y al mismo tiempo explicar cada una de las secciones que incluye ***NUESTRA*** página, al menos como estaba a finales de julio de 1998, cuando ALREDEDOR DE 194,000 VISITANTES habían "navegado" a través de ***NUESTRA*** página.
Afortunadamente para los amantes de tu obra, ***NUESTRA*** página incluye actualmente: 2,450 PÁGINAS Y 2,490 GRÁFICAS, que todo el mundo puede "visitar" a través de cada una de las SECCIONES. A fines de enero de 1999, ***NUESTRA*** PÁGINA TENÍA MÁS DE 425,000 VISITANTES.
Finalmente, quiero decirte, Vincent, que aprecio mucho la posibilidad de estar en contacto con tu obra y tu vida a través de ***NUESTRA*** página, porque siempre que visito ***NUESTRA*** página, encuentro algo nuevo, o al menos diferente, porque David siempre está mejorando y actualizando ***NUESTRA*** página, es por eso que he decidido TRATAR DE VISITAR TANTO COMO PUEDA ***NUESTRA*** PÁGINA, DEBIDO A QUE ¡ME GUSTA TENER LA OPORTUNIDAD DE CONOCER CADA VEZ QUE LA VISITO MÁS ACERCA DE LA OBRA Y VIDA DE VINCENT VAN GOGH!
