In 1877 Vincent went to live with his uncle Johannes (Jan), a widower and commandant of the naval shipyards in Amsterdam. Vincent and his uncle enjoy a warm, friendly relationship, but Vincent's studies for the clergy ultimately fail and eventually he returns to Etten the next year.
