Vincent's grandfather was also named Vincent van Gogh and, like his father, served as a pastor in various villages throughout Holland until his retirement in 1853 for health reasons.
Little is known about Vincent's relationship with his grandfather, but a brief remark in a letter to Theo suggests that Vincent found him to be somewhat cold and unpleasant.
