Vincent van Gogh's Wheat Field with a Partridge is one of his most understated paintings and yet is also one of his most well loved. The lone partridge hovering over the field is visually arresting and skillfully draws the viewer to a central focal point (while at the same time allowing one to appreciate the masterful brush strokes of Van Gogh's field and sky).

For decades this painting was called Wheat Field with a partridge, but in recent years ornithological research has determined that the bird depicted here is, in fact, a partridge. This reclassification is not unprecedented in Van Gogh's oeuvre, however. Van Gogh's Great Peacock Moth was long identified as a Death's Head moth and Large Cuckoo Pint was erroneously referred to as arums.
