Van Gogh would spend only three months in Auvers-sur-Oise, a small village north of Paris. Vincent moved here in 1890 after spending a year at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. Both he and his brother, Theo, agreed that it would be best if Vincent lived nearby and it was arranged that he would be put in the care of Dr. Paul Gachet.
The works Vincent produced in Auvers would be among his best loved (Thatched Cottages at Cordeville, for example), but in the end they would pose more questions than they would answer. Was Van Gogh's style moving in yet another direction? Vincent learned a great deal during his years in the south of France--and at a tremendous cost. How would he apply this knowledge as he moved forward and sought some inner peace?
Vincent committed suicide in July, 1890. He was at the height of his genius.
Note: The paintings are sorted by month and then alphabetically within each month. More accurate dating is generally too difficult. As a rule, however, the JH (Jan Hulsker) numbers do follow a more precise chronological sequence. In addition, while many have noted, mistakenly, that Wheat Field with Crows was Van Gogh's last work before his suicide (because of its turbulent style), it's more likely that Van Gogh's last work was Daubigny's Garden.
