AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS -- The Van Gogh Museum has acquired a set of 55 letters from Vincent van Gogh to the Dutch artist Anthon van Rappard. Van Gogh and Van Rappard were close friends during Van Gogh's early Dutch period as an artist, but Van Rappard's criticism of Van Gogh's Potato Eaters soured the friendship and ended their relationship. This collection of letters was acquired via Sotheby's in New York from a private collection.
The Van Gogh Museum calls the acquisition, made possible by contributions from several corporate donors, "a crucial addition to the approximately 700 letters by his hand currently in the Van Gogh Museum collection."
