The Van Gogh Letters

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands -- The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Constantijn Huygens Institute in The Hague announce an international competition for the translation into English of the forthcoming definitive edition of the correspondence of Vincent van Gogh.

There are 900 letters in all, 570 in Dutch (530,000 words) and 330 in French (235,000 words). Translators are required for both languages.

Those who wish to be considered for the project are invited to send a curriculum vitae, together with a résumé of their translation experience and list of publications to the editors:

Upon registration, applicants will be asked to supply trial translations of three specified passages from Van Gogh's letters totalling around 1,500 words, to be returned within one week of receipt. Please indicate in your reply to this announcement which week would suit you best.

The closing date for applications is 14 October 2001. The project will start in January 2002.
