Joseph Roulin was Vincent's most devoted friend during the artist's time in Arles, France. Shortly after Van Gogh mutilated his ear, Roulin accepted a better position with the post office in Marseilles and moved there with his family in 1889. At the time of his death in 1903 Joseph Roulin was just beginning to hear the first whisperings of his friend, Vincent's, success as an artist.
