빈센트 반 고흐의 900여점에 달하는 유명한 그림들은 화가로서의 10년이라는 짧은 생활 속에서 이루어졌습니다. 널리 알려진 그의 스케치와 수채화 역시 그렇습니다. 그러나 반 고흐의 편지 스케치에 대해서는 그다지 알려져 있지 않습니다. 그는 화가로서의 삶에서 동생 테오와 애정어린 서신왕래를 하였습니다. 동생과의 많은 서신왕래에서 (다른 사람들과의 왕래에서도) 빈센트는 작업의 발전을 보여주는 수단으로서 스케치를 했습니다.
